1926 - The Treasure of the Lake

Another Allan Quatermain Adventure

According to McKay, Scott and Whatmore, the first appearance of THE TREASURE OF THE LAKE was as a serialized novel, published in Hutchinson's Adventure-Story Magazine in 4 parts: February through May 1926, without illustrations.

Doubleday, Page and Company published the first edition in book-form in New York on May 7, 1926. McKay and Scott both agree on the New York publication date, and claim that 5,000 copies comprise the first printing. There are no illustrations, nor ads at the end of the book.

Whatmore claims that Hutchinson and Company published the first edition in book-form in London on September 24, 1926. Apparently, 7,000 copies were printed, without illustrations, with ads at the end of the book dated Autumn 1926.

Higgins claims that Hutchinson paid £300 ($25,000 in 2020 dollars) for the serial rights, and £700 ($60,000 in 2020 dollars) was advanced for publication in book-form.

The Ryerson Press published the first edition in Canada, likely also in 1926.

Grosset and Dunlap reprinted this title in America.

I do not own any of the books pictured below, unless noted. I do own copies of both the British and American first editions.

The serialization in Hutchinson's Adventure-Story Magazine is very rare and I do not own any of it. I did find an image of the May 1926 cover
