1966 - The Sound of Thunder

Sequel to WHEN THE LION FEEDS, continuing Sean Courtney's story.

William Heinemann published the first British edition on July 25, 1966, and Simon and Schuster published the first American edition under the title: THE ROAR OF THUNDER.

William Heinemann reprinted THE SOUND OF THUNDER numerous times: in 1967, 1970, 1973, 1976, 1980, 1983, 1987, and 1988 for a Uniform Edition.

I own an exceedingly rare Uncorrected Proof copy. This is even more scarce since Wilbur signed it for me.

Steve Sandley provided this photo of a letter from Heinemann revealing publication date as July 25, 1966.

I own 5 copies of first printing of the British first edition, and 3 of them are pictured below. Wilbur signed all 5 of my copies.

Below: A copy that is owned by Nick De Carteret, who was able to meet Wilbur at the farewell party that Macmillan threw for Wilbur at Mossiman's in Belgravia at the time Wilbur was switching to Harper Collins as his publisher

The signed copy below I found on eBay, and it is not in my collection

NOTE

The dust jackets for the first printings are made of thicker paper, which is easily subject to damage. It is VERY difficult to locate DJs that are in Near Fine or Fine condition. Furthermore, it is VERY difficult to locate DJs where the title--THE SOUND OF THUNDER--is still red on the spine. Too often, the title has been faded to pink or even white.

I have owned and sold numerous signed copies of THE SOUND OF THUNDER. All below are first printings, except the last one designated as a 1983 printing.

1983 reprint

The Simon and Schuster first edition of THE ROAR OF THUNDER was published 1966

Simon and Schuster never reprinted its first edition or published any later editions, so all copies are first printings of the first edition.

I own 3 copies of the American first edition, 2 of which are pictured below.

Wilbur signed 2 of my copies.
